Trying to find something to motivate myself and I found this little line from Van Gogh

There are animal rights activists trying to ban a Filipino restaurant in New York from selling balut (which is a duck fetus egg) because it’s disgusting and inhumane and it making me so mad
You can think it’s gross and disgusting and refuse to eat it (I personally don’t like it at all) but that doesn’t give you the right to tell a culture what parts of their cuisine they get to sell in America because it’s not “pretty” or “appealing” to you. If you don’t like it, no one is asking you to participate in or partake in it. Like balut is one of the cultural staples of Filipino cuisine and it was adopted into our diet out of necessity due to how expensive meats and other proteins are.
And it’s so frustrating that the petition has met it’s signature goal and will most likely win. It’ll just keep perpetuating the stereotype that Southeast Asian food is “disgusting” and “unappealing” to Americans because it doesn’t fit the pristine presentations that they’ve become accustomed to through East Asian cuisine. Don’t get me wrong, I love East Asian food to death, but I find a lot of the food I grew up with and love is continually met with resistance because it’s a completely different preparation and presentation style that still bars it from registering underneath the ironically broad category of “Asian food.” And it’s so tough to share my culture with others when they are hesitant to even take a bite.
We created much of the food we make in order to adopt to the conditions around us. I’m sorry it’s not “pretty” or “appetizing” enough for you, but that doesn’t mean you get tell us what we can and cannot sell.
IF YOU DONT LIKE IT DONT EAT IT. STOP FCUKING SHOVING YOUR OWN PREFERENCES DOWN OTHER PEOPLES THROATS
haha what the fuck. the petition has absolutely NOTHING to do about culture. this is not about white people/americans finding SEA cuisine disgusting but rather the fact that this is animal abuse. it’s not even about being disgusting, but because it is inhumane. this no different to petitioning the dog-eaters in china.
don’t get me wrong. when i still ate meat, i never found balut disgusting. i actually loved it for its novelty and taste, and always looked forward when vendors would pass by my house. but i advocate for every animal’s right to live and lead a vegetarian life now, and i wouldn’t dream of eating it again just to satisfy my selfish tastes.
framing an animal welfare issue into a race/culture one is absolutely ridiculous. i can’t believe the mental gymnastics that went into this thought process. the activists weren’t shutting down the restaurant, they were trying to get the restaurant to stop serving balut, if this article is to be believed.
goddammit meat-eaters, you already have your cows and pigs and chickens and fish, let us animal lovers try to save other animals without accusing us of racism.
TL;DR NYC ANIMAL WELFARE ACTIVISTS DON’T HATE FILIPINO CUISINE, THEY HATE THE FACT THAT UNBORN DUCKS ARE BEING EATEN.

Goodness, now I really miss regular fangirling.

Real love’s a patient thing. It takes time to be kind. It doesn’t get jealous, it doesn’t brag; it’s not stuck up about itself. It’s not rude or self-serving. It’s hard to piss love off; it doesn’t hold grudges. Love isn’t happy with evil; it’s truth that gives it joy. It always protects the loved, always trusts them, never gives up hope in them, always works to be there for them. Real love never fails.
And love is itself. It doesn’t have to be like any other kind. It doesn’t have to fit into a specific box. It is the box. And it’s not the box’s shape that matters; it’s the unique thing inside.
Know it when you see it. There’s not enough of it around.
" -(cleaning out the sticky-note app this morning, I found this. Looks like a rephrase of 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. As for the rest of it, did I write it? God knows. I hope I did.)
Love IS the box.
